It holds one of the richest collections of turn-of-the-century homes in the nation, originally home to a mix of businessmen, doctors, lawyers, educators, masons and railroad workers. The neighborhood declined after World War II as newer subdivisions drew residents elsewhere, then saw a wave of restoration and revitalization that continues today. Fairmount sits just south of West Magnolia Avenue, with Mistletoe Heights and Berkeley Place to the west, Ryan Place to the south and Terrell Heights to the east, and is close to the Near South Side Medical District and downtown employment centers.
